AI Filmmaking, Done Right: AI Builds the World, Humans Tell the Story
“AI film studio” is becoming a loaded phrase. For some producers it’s exciting; for a lot of them it’s a red flag. Shorthand for replacing actors, crews, and the people who actually make films. We use AI on our stages, and our position is simple: AI builds the world. Humans tell the story.
Here’s what AI filmmaking actually looks like at L.A. & ABQ Castle Studios. And, just as important, where we draw the line.
AI as a tool, not a replacement
AI is very good at one thing we used to spend weeks and real money on: generating and refining the environments a film is shot against. On our CastleVision stages, AI can produce and iterate photoreal virtual sets dramatically faster than a traditional art-department pipeline.
It does not take over your production. And it’s entirely optional. Productions that want every frame hand-built still get our patented capture, our Unreal Engine pipeline, and our 250+ virtual sets with zero generative AI in the workflow. Productions that want the speed and savings can dial AI in selectively, where it actually helps. Either way, the generation happens off-stage during prep; the shoot day stays exactly what shoot days have always been.
Where AI actually helps
- Set generation from a brief. Describe the location, “1950s diner, neon-lit, rain on the window”. And we generate candidates in hours, not weeks.
- Iteration at the speed of a note. Director wants the alley warmer, the skyline taller, the streetlights brighter? Variants come back in minutes.
- Capture enhancement. AI upscales and cleans real-world CastleVision captures so they hold up at film resolution and color depth.
- Relighting and look-dev. Same set, different time of day; same shot, different weather: matched to the script.
- Locations that don’t exist. A specific period, a fictional planet, a city from a novel. Environments no scout could ever find.
- Lower budget, same fidelity. A custom virtual set gets to camera faster and for less than a traditional build.

Your cast, your crew, your creative
We don’t replace your cast with AI. Your principal performers act for real, in real time, under real direction. Where AI does step in is narrow and deliberate: background performers in AI-generated scenes, and stand-ins for shots that would otherwise put a person in danger. So a crowd reads full and a dangerous stunt doesn’t risk anyone, while your leads stay human. We never recreate a specific performer with AI without explicit permission.
Beyond that, the people stay people. The DP, gaffer, grips and sound team on your call sheet are real working professionals, yours or local crew in Los Angeles and Albuquerque. We don’t generate screenplays, dialogue, or creative decisions, those belong to the writers, directors, and producers on the call sheet. And we don’t run AI on captured footage of real talent without permission, or retain training data from any production we work with.
The economics
Virtual production already took travel, weather, location fees and physical set builds out of the budget. AI integration removes a chunk of what’s left, the custom-environment line items, without changing the look on screen. For productions shooting in New Mexico, it stacks with the state’s 30% refundable film tax credit: contact us for details.
Optional, by design
Want AI in your workflow? Want it nowhere near your workflow? Both are fine. Book a studio tour, bring your script, and we’ll talk through what AI could do for your production, and what it shouldn’t. Then you decide. More on our approach to AI-generated virtual sets.
