Spaceship sets you don’t have to build

Spaceship interiors are the most expensive thing to physically build in film. Hundreds of feet of curved corridor, custom set dressing for every bay and bunk, lighting rigs that no other production will reuse. The construction line item alone often kills the genre.

Our connected sci-fi interiors are already built. And in pixels, not plywood. Cockpit, corridor, crew quarters, lab, mess hall, engine room. Walk from one to the next in a single shot if your story calls for it. None of it strikes at the end of the day.

Start with the spaceship bridge set or the spaceship cockpit set, then browse every spaceship interior film set in the library: bridges, cockpits, airlocks, engine rooms, living quarters and hangars. For orbital scenes, the space station film sets run from the International Space Station to a spaceport.

Spaceship interior sets, room by room

Each room below is a ready set. Load one for a single scene, or move between them in a day with no company move.

Beyond the ship, every sci-fi and space set in the library is one click away, from space stations to the neon cyberpunk interior set.

Space station sets, from the ISS to a spaceport

Orbital stories need a station, and nobody is renting you the real one. The International Space Station set is modeled on the ISS Columbus module, with its lab racks, control panels and crew quarters. The space station set has long metal corridors and cryopods. The space station with planet view looks out through large windows onto distant planets, the near-Earth space station looks down on the planet below, and the spaceport set is a domed terminal under a giant hologram of Earth.

Put a practical console or a crew seat in the foreground and it blends with the station behind it. Browse all the space station and spaceship sets for film in the library.

Alien planets and Moon surfaces

The Moon landscape set is a photoreal lunar surface: grey regolith, terraced craters, hard low sunlight and the Earth low on the horizon.

For other worlds, the sci-fi desert city set is a canyon settlement of domed dwellings and market streets, the polar sci-fi set is an abandoned lab deep in the ice, and the crashed starship set leaves a wrecked ship on an alien desert. See every one in our alien planet and Moon film sets.

Spaceship set rental at each studio: Los Angeles (Burbank) and Albuquerque

Every rental includes the studio, the set library, lighting, grip and audio packages, dressing rooms, makeup, green rooms and production offices, plus the virtual system operator who drives the environment in real time. You never hire a systems team. An optional crew package adds three camera operators (one on the jib) and a teleprompter operator, or you bring your own team. The full set library is available at both studios.

  • Los Angeles: our Burbank studio. A pre-lit green screen cyclorama with a 20-foot ceiling (15 feet to grid). On site: a 13-foot CamMate Encodacam jib, five green rooms, and a giant LED video village where the whole team watches the finished composite. Drive-on load-in, even for vehicles, and 20+ parking spaces, about five minutes from Warner Bros.
  • New Mexico: ABQ Castle Studios. On site: three ARRI Alexa 35 cinema cameras with Fujinon cinema zooms, a carbon-fiber telescoping crane with dolly, three camera-tracking systems, 36 Aputure Nova P300c light fixtures across the grid and floor, and a full grip package. A furniture and prop warehouse for dressing the foreground, easy load-in and extensive parking.

Every production is quoted on its own shoot days, crew and sets. Here is how a production is priced.

Sci-fi features shot at our studios

Abstraction (2025), a released science-fiction feature directed by Nathan Ellis, was shot entirely on our stages.

Mr. Spaceship, An Adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s Novelette was captured almost entirely in camera at our Albuquerque film studio. Deep space, the surface of the Moon and the interior of a living warship were all shot on the same floor over 19 shooting days, with a New Mexico resident crew and an all-New Mexico cast. The film is now in post. Read how Mr. Spaceship was shot in Albuquerque.

For a feature, Albuquerque adds the budget argument. ABQ Castle Studios is a New Mexico Qualified Production Facility, so studio days there sit on the 30% track of the state’s refundable credit. See how the New Mexico film tax credit works.

Shoot every episode on the same ship

A series goes back to the same ship every episode. Here the ship lives on a drive. We reload the exact bridge, lighting and framing for every block and every season, with no storage fees and no monthly holding cost. Film entire episodes aboard, or a single scene, and swap sets the same day: a courtroom in the morning, a spaceship by evening.

Series already work this way on our floor. Hilton Head Island, a 32-episode series, shot more than 50 locations at our Burbank studio. For features and series built on Unreal Engine sets, see virtual studio rental for film and TV.

Better than a physical build

Our sci-fi environments are not a budget compromise. They do things a built set can’t.

A practical spaceship set ends at the soundstage wall. Ours doesn’t, so the camera can track down the corridor without finding a wall at the end of it, and the cargo bay can be as big as the scene calls for. The observation deck looks out on an actual planet turning below, not a painted backdrop or an LED loop, and the window in the airlock shows real depth, real parallax and real distance, because the world on the other side of it is a complete, built-out environment, not a flat image.

Physical sci-fi sets are also locked the moment they’re built: one lighting state, one configuration, one scale. Ours are alive. Change the time of day on the alien horizon. Re-rig the bridge for a battle-damage pass. Swap a pristine corridor for the same corridor after the hull breach. Scale the whole ship up between the wide and the close. The environment follows the story, not what the carpenters had time to build.

The result reads as more real on camera, not less, because every surface responds to the light, every distance has true depth, and the camera can go anywhere without finding the edge of the world.

Building a spaceship set vs. renting ours

A built spaceship set is a construction budget: design, carpentry, set dressing for every bay, a lighting rig, then a strike or a storage bill at wrap. Renting ours replaces that line with studio days. Here is how the two compare.

  • Rooms. A built set gives you the rooms you paid to build. Ours is a library of ready ship rooms: bridge, cockpit, airlock, quarters, engine room, hangar and lab, each loaded in seconds.
  • Cameras. Three cameras can roll at once, each with its own render, so each one sees the right perspective of the same corridor.
  • Pickups. A struck set is gone, and a stored one costs rent. Ours reloads from a drive, even months later, with no storage fees.
  • What comes with it. The studio, lighting, grip and audio packages, dressing rooms and green rooms, and the operator who runs the virtual sets.
  • Price. Ours is quoted on your shoot days, crew size, set complexity and studio, with no construction, no strike and no company moves in it.

More pages per day, fewer variables

The trade most productions make with sci-fi is between scope and schedule. Bigger sets, fewer days. Cheaper sets, less ambition. Our studios remove that trade.

You shoot a corridor chase in the morning, a bridge scene at noon, a cargo bay action sequence after lunch: no company moves, no breakdown, no relight. The variables that normally compound across a sci-fi shoot day (set turnover, lighting reset, continuity drift) just don’t happen here.

Two of the most searched-for starting points are the International Space Station set and the command center set. Both load in seconds, and both can be redressed for your story.

Photoreal, in camera

If virtual production is new to you: the location is a photoreal virtual set that appears around your talent live, in camera, on our stage. You see the finished shot on the monitor while you film.

It is lit to match and drawn in real time on our green screen stage, with the background shifting correctly as the camera moves. The performance lands because the world is right there.

In our Unreal Engine filming studio, the engine draws the ship in real time, camera tracking tells it where every lens is pointing, and Ultimatte keyers composite the actors into it live. That is CastleVision, our method, pioneered in 2007 and now protected by two U.S. patents. It is virtual production beyond LED walls: each camera gets its own render, so three cameras can move through the same corridor in different directions and each one sees the right perspective.

Your own ship, built to the script

If the ship in your script is not in the library, our in-house set builders and artists build custom virtual environments to your spec, from your references and plans. We can also capture a real place and bring it onto the stage. Here is how we get you nearly any location, real or imagined.

Controlled studio conditions

No location scout for the alien planet exterior. No weather waiting on the icy outpost shoot. No travel for the desert station. The set is on stage, the lighting is locked, and the schedule is yours.

The same ships work beyond features. An agency can load a spaceship set for a commercial, an artist can book sci-fi music video sets, and every ship sits in our library of virtual standing sets at both studios. For more on the genre, read about futuristic film production at L.A. Castle Studios.

Questions

Spaceship and sci-fi set rental, explained.

Can I rent a spaceship set in Los Angeles?
Yes. Our Burbank studio at 154 S. Victory Blvd, in the Media Capital of the World, carries a library of spaceship and sci-fi sets: bridges, cockpits, corridors, airlocks, hangars, labs and space stations. Every set loads in seconds, and the same library is available at our Albuquerque studio, so a production can use either one.
How much does it cost to rent a spaceship set?
Every production is quoted individually. The price depends on shoot days, crew size, how complex the set is and which studio you use. What drops out of a sci-fi budget is the build itself: no set construction required, no strike at wrap, no company moves between the bridge and the engine room, and no storage fees, because the ship lives on a drive and reloads any time.
Have sci-fi features been shot at your studios?
Yes. Abstraction (2025), a released science-fiction feature, was shot entirely on our stages. Mr. Spaceship, An Adaptation of Philip K. Dick's Novelette, a feature-length sci-fi drama, was captured almost entirely in camera at ABQ Castle Studios in Albuquerque: deep space, the lunar surface and the interior of a living warship, all on the same floor over 19 shooting days. It is now in post.
Is this an LED volume?
No. The ship is composited live from a green screen, not played back on an LED wall behind the cast. Unreal Engine draws the set in real time, camera tracking follows every lens, and Ultimatte keyers put the actors inside it, so the finished shot is on the monitor while you film. Each camera gets its own render, so three cameras can move in different directions through the same corridor and each one sees the correct perspective.
Can you build a custom spaceship for our script?
Yes. If the ship you need is not in the library, our in-house set builders and artists build custom virtual environments to a production's spec, from your references and plans. We can also capture a real place with CastleVision and bring it onto the stage. Build time depends on the design, so send us the script pages or references and we will quote it.
Can we bring our own practical cockpit, consoles or props?
Yes. Physical foreground pieces such as seats, consoles, furniture and props sit in front of the virtual set and blend with it, so the shot cuts like a built set. Burbank has easy load-in, even for vehicles onto the stage, and Albuquerque has a full furniture and prop warehouse for dressing the foreground.
What happens if we need pickups or reshoots months later?
Pickups do not mean a rebuild. The ship lives on a drive, so we reload the exact set, lighting and framing, even months later, with no monthly holding cost.
What is a virtual spaceship set?
A virtual spaceship set is a photoreal ship interior built in Unreal Engine, the video game engine that draws our virtual sets in real time. On our green screen stage it appears around your actors live, in camera, and you see the finished shot on the monitor while you film. Camera tracking keeps the corridor in the right perspective as the camera moves, and practical seats, consoles and props in the foreground blend with the ship behind them.
Do you have a space station or International Space Station set?
Yes. The library includes an International Space Station set modeled on the ISS Columbus module, a space station set with long metal corridors and cryopods, a space station with a planet view, a near-Earth space station looking down on the planet, and a spaceport. Each one loads in seconds at either studio, and practical consoles or seats can sit in the foreground.
Can we shoot a sci-fi series on the same ship across episodes?
Yes. We reload the same ship for every episode, block or season, and sets swap the same day, so an episode can move from the bridge to a planet surface without a company move.
Which studio is better for a sci-fi feature, Burbank or Albuquerque?
Both studios run the same pipeline and carry the full set library, so the choice comes down to budget and logistics. Albuquerque is a New Mexico Qualified Production Facility, which puts studio days on the 30% track of the state's refundable film credit, and it is where Mr. Spaceship shot. Our Burbank studio, in the Media Capital of the World, sits about five minutes from Warner Bros., with a giant LED video village where the whole team watches the finished composite. A production can also split between the two without losing continuity.
Can we do tracked crane moves on a spaceship shot?
Yes. Burbank has a 13-foot CamMate Encodacam jib and Albuquerque has a carbon-fiber telescoping crane with dolly. Tracked moves keep the ship in the right perspective as the camera travels.
Can we shoot alien planet or Moon surface scenes?
Yes. The library includes a Moon landscape set, a sci-fi desert city, a polar sci-fi base and a crashed starship on an alien desert. Mr. Spaceship shot its lunar scenes in Albuquerque.
