Celebrity Crime Scene: Princess Diana Premieres on FOX — Shot Entirely at L.A. Castle Studios

We’ve been waiting to say this one out loud: Celebrity Crime Scene: Princess Diana, the new FOX special premiering Thursday, August 20 at 8/7c, was shot entirely at L.A. Castle Studios. Every on-camera segment. Every investigator. Every environment. All in our Burbank studio, and a story that spans a Paris tunnel in 1997, that’s exactly the kind of assignment this place was built for.

The special

The one-hour program re-examines the 1997 Paris car crash that killed Princess Diana, a story the world knows in outline and still argues about in detail. Investigators Kerry Daynes, Rich Staropoli, and Jakson Buhaj walk the evidence and weigh theories that have circulated for nearly three decades, from the unidentified vehicles in the Pont de l’Alma tunnel to the claims that have surrounded the crash since the night it happened. Harvey Levin and Charles Latibeaudiere are among the executive producers.

And the format’s signature move, the reason this franchise keeps coming back, to our stage. Is that it doesn’t just describe the scene. It puts its investigators inside a photoreal recreation of it, including, as FOX describes it, the crash from the perspectives of those in the car.

What happened on our stage

The Pont de l’Alma underpass is a working Paris roadway. You can’t close it for a shoot, stage 1997 traffic inside it, or put a camera where no camera could physically go. So the production did it the CastleVision way: the scene was rebuilt as a photoreal Unreal Engine environment, run in real time on our Burbank stage, and composited into the camera live: the method we pioneered in 2007, now protected by two U.S. patents.

That’s a network television special, hosts, recreations, and all, produced in a single studio, with the final image on the monitor while the cameras rolled. No company moves. No location days. No months of post compositing. When a theory called for a new angle, the world behind the investigators simply gave them one.

This is also the second Celebrity Crime Scene special shot here in three months. For the franchise’s first installment, we helped rebuild Marilyn Monroe’s Brentwood home as a navigable digital twin so investigators could walk the rooms and test the sightlines. They came back. Producers usually do.
