More about this set

Welcome to the Post-Apocalyptic Desert Shantytown at L.A. Castle Studios. Out in the red desert, survivors have built a town from whatever was left. Shacks of corrugated tin and salvaged wood climb on stilts and scaffolds, lookout towers rise on ladders and stairways, and rusting water towers and silos stand over the rooftops. Satellite dishes and solar panels crowd the roofs, power lines run between the cacti, and a green oasis pool shines at the edge of town under the mountains. It is rough, sunburned and full of life.

A whole settlement to explore

Shoot the town wide from the ridge with the mountains behind it, follow your cast through the lanes between the shacks, climb a lookout tower for a high angle, or come in close on a doorway, a rusted camper or a dish turned to the sky. The oasis gives you a meeting place by the water. Dust hangs in the air and the light changes from hard noon to a hazy golden afternoon, so one set covers a whole day in the story.

Made for wasteland stories and music videos

This is the world for a post-apocalyptic film or series, a survival drama, a dystopian western, a road movie that stops for water, or a game trailer. It is also a striking, sun-baked backdrop for a music video or a rugged commercial for a truck, a drink or an outdoor brand. Real props, costumes and vehicles in the foreground blend with the town in camera.

One shoot day, a whole wasteland

Pair it with the Abandoned Post-Apocalyptic City, the Post-Apocalyptic Safe House and the Sci-Fi Desert City, and browse more sci-fi sets. The shantytown loads in seconds at our Burbank studio and our Albuquerque studio, with no desert travel and nothing to build or strike.

Common questions

Can you film a post-apocalyptic wasteland without going on location?

Yes. The Post-Apocalyptic Desert Shantytown is a photoreal virtual set that appears around your cast live, in camera, at our Burbank studio in Los Angeles and our Albuquerque studio. There is no desert company move, no heat or wind delays and no build. It loads in seconds, and the finished shot is on the monitor while you film.

What is in the desert shantytown set?

A whole settlement: shacks of corrugated tin and salvaged wood stacked on stilts and scaffolds, lookout towers with ladders and stairs, rusting water towers and silos, satellite dishes and solar panels on the roofs, power lines strung between cacti, an old camper trailer, and a green oasis pool, all under red rock mountains and a wide desert sky.

What pairs with the post-apocalyptic shantytown?

The Abandoned Post-Apocalyptic City and the Post-Apocalyptic Safe House cover the ruined city and the hideout, and the Desert Village and Sci-Fi Desert City add other desert settlements. All of them load at the same studio on the same day.
