What a virtual studio rental gets a film or series

At L.A. Castle Studios in Burbank and ABQ Castle Studios in Albuquerque, the location is a photoreal virtual set that appears around your talent live, in camera, on our stage. You see the finished shot on the monitor while you film, with no background added later in post, and the location can change between takes.

For a feature or a series that means the location list shoots in one building. No set construction is required, nothing needs to be struck, and there is no company move between a hospital corridor in the morning and a suburban street after lunch. The virtual system operator who runs the sets is included in every rental, so your director asks for the environment and the camera rolls. If you are pricing virtual studios for rent against a build or a location shoot, the difference is what drops off the budget: the construction, the strike and the company move.

Your location list, without a company move

Break the script down by room and check it against the virtual set library: 250+ sets ready to load, grouped so a line producer can check a location list in minutes. Hospital sets, city streets and spaceship interiors each have their own page. A grounded drama can live on the hospital corridor and the suburban street; a period piece can play in the mission control room; a genre picture has bridges, hangars and whole planets in our sci-fi and spaceship sets; and the breaking-news cutaway has newsroom sets for film scenes.

If the script needs a place the library does not have, our artists build it from your reference, or we recreate a real location with our patented CastleVision method. Real furniture and props dress the foreground and blend with the virtual set, so the frame cuts like a built location.

Sets live on drives. Pickups and a second season reload the exact set, lighting and framing, even months later, with no storage fee.

Unreal Engine, live in camera: what changes on the day

Unreal Engine, the video game engine, draws each set in real time from the tracked camera’s point of view, and the composite is finished before the take ends. The director approves the actual shot on set instead of imagining it against green, and the DP lights to a picture everyone can see. In Burbank the whole team watches it on a giant LED video village.

This is virtual production beyond LED walls: the actors perform on a green screen cyclorama, and the environment is keyed in live rather than displayed on a wall behind them. For the full pipeline, the gear at each studio and how a shoot day runs, see our Unreal Engine filming studio page and the virtual production technology behind it. If you are weighing an LED volume, read our LED volume comparison.

Multi-camera coverage for episodic schedules

Each camera gets its own render of the set. Three cameras can move in different directions through the same space, each with the correct perspective, so coverage takes fewer resets. Hilton Head Island shot 32 episodes and more than 50 locations in our Burbank studio.

When a picture wants a single-camera cinematic approach, the same pipeline runs that way too. For short-form series on an eight-day clock, see vertical drama and micro-series production.

Two studios for film and TV: Burbank and Albuquerque

Both studios run the same pipeline and carry the full set library, so a production can split between them without losing continuity.

  • Burbank, 154 S. Victory Blvd, directly across from Nickelodeon and about five minutes from Warner Bros. A pre-lit green screen cyclorama with a 20-foot ceiling (15 feet to grid), silent HVAC, three Panasonic Varicam 35 cinema cameras, a CamMate Encodacam jib, drive-on load-in, 20+ parking spaces, five green rooms, writers’ rooms and production offices on site.
  • Albuquerque, 8610 President Pl NE, about ten minutes from the Sunport. One of the largest virtual production stages in the world, and almost everything shot there is a feature. Three ARRI Alexa 35 cinema cameras with Fujinon zooms, 36 Aputure Nova P300c fixtures, a telescoping crane, a furniture and prop warehouse and extensive parking. ABQ Castle Studios is a New Mexico Qualified Production Facility, so studio days put the production on the 30% track of the New Mexico film tax credit.

Features and series already shot here

Abstraction, a released 2025 feature, was shot entirely on our stages. Mr. Spaceship, An Adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s Novelette, a feature-length sci-fi drama now in post, was captured almost entirely in camera at our feature film studio in Albuquerque with a New Mexico crew and cast. In Burbank, Celebrity Crime Scene: Princess Diana for FOX was shot entirely on our stage, Discontinued with Bruce Campbell shot its host segments in a different world every scene, and productions including Aquaman 2, The Mummy, Greenland, Bosch and Inventing Anna shot scenes here. See the full credit list.

We pioneered real-time virtual production in Los Angeles in 2007, and we hold two U.S. patents on the method. We are the studio, not a production company, so you keep your production and your credit.

Questions

Virtual studio rental for film and TV: before you book.

What is a virtual studio?
A virtual studio is a studio where the location is a photoreal virtual set that appears around your talent live, in camera. You see the finished shot on the monitor while you film, with no background added later in post, and the location can change between takes. Ours are turnkey: the green screen cyclorama, camera tracking, Unreal Engine and live compositing are already in place, and the virtual system operator who runs them is included in every rental, in Burbank and in Albuquerque.
Can a feature film or a TV series really shoot in a virtual studio?
Yes. Abstraction, a released 2025 sci-fi feature, was shot entirely on our stages, and Mr. Spaceship, a feature-length sci-fi drama now in post, was captured almost entirely in camera at ABQ Castle Studios in Albuquerque. On the series side, Hilton Head Island shot 32 episodes and more than 50 locations in our Burbank studio, and Celebrity Crime Scene: Princess Diana for FOX was shot entirely on the Burbank stage.
What does a virtual studio rental include?
Every rental includes the studio, the sets from our 250+ set library, lighting and audio packages, the teleprompter system, support spaces (dressing rooms, makeup, green rooms and production offices) and the virtual system operator who drives the environment in real time. Camera and teleprompter operators are an optional crew package, or you bring your own team.
Burbank or Albuquerque: which studio fits our film or series?
Both run the same pipeline and carry the same set library, so a production can split between them without losing continuity. Our Burbank studio, in the Media Capital of the World, sits directly across from Nickelodeon and about five minutes from Warner Bros., with a 20-foot ceiling (15 feet to grid), stadium-style audience seating, writers' rooms and a giant LED video village, and it shoots features too. Albuquerque is our feature film studio, with three ARRI Alexa 35 cinema cameras, a furniture and prop warehouse, extensive parking, and studio days that can qualify for New Mexico's 30% refundable film tax credit.
How much does it cost to rent a virtual studio for film and TV?
There is no rate card. Every production is quoted on its own shoot days, crew size, set complexity and which studio you use. What comes off the budget: no set construction required, no strike, no company moves, no location fees, no travel days and no set storage. Send your dates, the script or location list and the shoot days, and a producer replies with availability at both studios and a quote.
Can we come back for pickups or a second season?
Yes. Sets live on drives, so there is no storage fee. Pickups do not mean a rebuild: the exact set, lighting and framing reload, even months later, which keeps a returning series or a reshoot day in continuity.
How do we book a virtual studio for a film or series?
Send the dates, the script or location list and the number of shoot days through the form on this page. A producer reads it, not a sales queue, and replies with availability at both studios and a quote built on your schedule. Producer tours run by appointment at both studios, with a live CastleVision demo, if you want to see the pipeline before you book.
What if our script calls for a location that is not in the library?
Our artists build it from your reference, or we capture the real place with our patented CastleVision method and bring it onto the stage. Real furniture and props dress the foreground and blend with the virtual set. Between the library, custom builds and CastleVision captures, nearly any scene a script calls for can be shot here.
