Short answer: a handful of famous lots and broadcast stages, most of them clustered around Culver City, Hollywood, Glendale and Burbank. Longer answer: the list is changing, because a growing share of talk and game formats no longer build a physical set at all.

The famous answer: the studio lots

The shows everyone asks about tape at real, nameable addresses:

  • Sony Pictures Studios, Culver City: Jeopardy! tapes on Stage 10, renamed the Alex Trebek Stage, and Wheel of Fortune tapes next door on Stage 11. Both have shot on the lot since the mid-’90s.
  • Television City. The Fairfax district broadcast complex that hosted decades of daytime TV, including The Price Is Right in Bob Barker Studio 33 for 51 years.
  • Haven Studios, Glendale. Where The Price Is Right moved in 2023 when Television City began its renovation.
  • El Capitan Entertainment Centre, Hollywood: Jimmy Kimmel Live! broadcasts from Hollywood Boulevard.
  • Burbank, talk-show country since Johnny Carson taped The Tonight Show from “beautiful downtown Burbank,” and still home to working lots and stages today.

So when people ask “where are game shows filmed,” the honest industry answer is: mostly greater Los Angeles, on purpose-built multi-camera stages with lighting grids, control rooms and audience seating.

Why these formats live on dedicated stages

Talk shows and game shows are the most industrial formats in television. They shoot multi-camera, often several episodes a day, in front of an audience, on a set that has to look identical every taping. That’s why they cluster on a few stages, the infrastructure (grid, audio, audience handling, fast turnarounds) matters more than the zip code.

The traditional cost of entry is the set itself: a talk-show home base or a game-show floor is a serious build, and it occupies the stage for the life of the show.

The shift: the set doesn’t have to be physical anymore

Here’s what’s changed. Virtual production stages now host these exact formats without a construction phase. On our Burbank studio floor, the set is a photoreal virtual environment rendered in real time in Unreal Engine and composited in camera while you shoot. The desk, chairs, podiums and props are real; the world around them is not. It’s the CastleVision method we pioneered in 2007, now patented.

That’s not theoretical. It’s how these shows have actually taped here:

  • Hart to Heart (NBC/Peacock) shot on our stage inside a grand winery set, watch the clip where Bryan Cranston remarks on how spectacular the set looks.
  • Game-show productions for major networks have run on our floor, including a massive custom game-show build with multiple shooting areas and an upstairs balcony. See our game show sets in Los Angeles.
  • Celebrity Ping Pong and the Diarra From Detroit cast reunion special for Paramount. The series itself shot on location, but when it came time to put the cast on a talk-show-style stage, that taped here in Burbank.

Because the environment is software, a producer can walk through our talk show sets, like the upscale news & talk show sets in our library, pick one, and tape on it the same week. Change the skyline behind the host between segments. Rebrand the whole set for a new season overnight. No build days, no strike days, no storage.

What that means for your show

If you’re producing a talk, panel, game or aftershow format, the question isn’t just “which lot has an open stage” anymore. A TV studio rental in Los Angeles on a virtual production stage gives you the finished look on day one, with audience seating and multi-cam workflow built in, in Burbank, or at our Albuquerque studio for New Mexico productions.

Frequently asked

Where are most game shows filmed?
Most American game shows tape in the Los Angeles area, on a small set of dedicated stages: Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune shoot at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, and The Price Is Right, after 51 years at Television City, now tapes at Haven Studios in Glendale. A growing number of game formats also shoot on virtual production stages like ours in Burbank, where the entire set exists in camera instead of on the shop floor.
Can you shoot a talk show or game show without building a physical set?
Yes. On a virtual production stage, the set is photoreal and rendered in real time, composited in camera as you shoot. So a multi-cam talk show or game show tapes against a finished-looking world with only the desk, chairs, podiums and props built for real. NBC/Peacock's Hart to Heart taped on our Burbank stage inside a grand winery set that was never physically built, using the CastleVision method we pioneered in 2007, now patented.
What talk shows are filmed in Los Angeles?
Late-night and daytime talk tapes across Hollywood and Burbank: Jimmy Kimmel Live! broadcasts from the El Capitan on Hollywood Boulevard, and Burbank has been talk-show country since Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Newer formats increasingly tape on virtual stages: Hart to Heart shot on our Burbank stage inside a photoreal winery environment.
What game shows are filmed in Los Angeles?
Jeopardy! and Wheel of Fortune tape at Sony Pictures Studios in Culver City, and The Price Is Right moved to Haven Studios in Glendale in 2023. Network game-show productions have also taped on our Burbank virtual production stage, where the game floor is rendered live in camera instead of built from scratch.
Do virtual production stages support a live studio audience?
Ours do. Our Burbank stage runs multi-camera talk and game formats with audience seating, and because the compositing happens live, the audience and the control room see the finished show, host inside the set, not a green void, while it tapes.
