What a standing set is in film, and what makes ours virtual

A standing set is a dressed location that stays up so a production can rent it instead of building its own: the apartment, the hospital corridor, the precinct, the courtroom. Ours are virtual standing sets. The location is a photoreal virtual set that appears around your talent live, in camera, on our stage. You see the finished shot on the monitor while you film, with no background added later in post, and the location can change between takes. It is virtual production in Los Angeles applied to the rooms a script keeps coming back to.

The furniture your actors touch is real. The room around them comes from our virtual set library of 250+ standing sets and is drawn in real time by Unreal Engine, the video game engine at the heart of our Unreal Engine virtual production studio. Your art department dresses the foreground with its own pieces, and they blend into the virtual room on camera.

Standing sets in Los Angeles, without the lot

Los Angeles has traditional standing sets on lots and stages around the city. They solve the build, but they keep every other constraint: each set lives at one address, books around other productions, and looks the way it was dressed. When the script moves to a location that is not on that lot, the company moves too.

Our standing sets keep the idea and drop the constraints. Here is how the two compare, line by line.

Traditional standing set rental compared with a virtual standing set at L.A. and ABQ Castle Studios
Traditional standing set Virtual standing set
Locations per booking One location at one address Every location at one address, from a library of 250+ sets
Other productions Booked around other shows' schedules The whole library comes with the studio, so no set is tied up by another show
Redressing Looks the way it was dressed Redressed to your show: colors, design and often the weather can be changed to fit the script
Moving between sets A company move to the next address Swap the apartment for the precinct between setups, in seconds
Paying for the set Stays up, but you rent it one location at a time One studio rental covers every set you load, with no storage fees between seasons
Pickups months later Rebook the room and match the dressing again The exact set, lighting and framing reload
Looking up The camera finds the lighting grid above the walls The camera can tilt up to the set's own ceiling or sky
The set you need is not there Look for another lot We build it or capture the real place with CastleVision

If you have been pricing film set rentals in Los Angeles one room at a time, this is the other model. If you are comparing against renting a whole facility, start with film studio rental or production studio rental. Apartments, hospitals, precincts and courtrooms on standby

Most scripted shows live in a few recurring places. These are the pre-built movie sets scripts ask for most, each with its own page, photos and details, and each room type has its own page in the library, or you can browse all 250+ virtual standing sets:

It holds up at series scale. Hilton Head Island, a 32-episode series, shot more than 50 locations in our Burbank studio.

Swap the standing set between setups, not between shoot days

Sets load in seconds, so one shoot day can run from a courtroom in the morning to one of our spaceship standing sets by evening. The crew stays on the floor and nobody drives to the next location. Our demo shoot of seven locations in one studio took hours, not weeks.

Because the room is virtual, the camera can tilt up and find the set’s ceiling or sky instead of our lighting grid, a move a built set on a sound stage rarely allows. See it in tilting up on standing sets.

Continuity is the other half. Pickups do not mean a rebuild: months later, the exact set, lighting and framing reload. That is why standing sets suit feature films and series, vertical drama and micro-series with many recurring rooms, and commercials that need several locations in a day.

Not in the library? We build it or capture it

The library is the fast path, not the only one. If the set you need is not there, say, a specific morgue or a real client office, our set builders and artists create it from a reference, branded or dressed to your show. Or we capture the real place with CastleVision, our patented method for filming a real place, with its real light and movement, and bringing it onto the stage, so actors perform inside it and the camera can move as if it were there. A client’s own restaurant, store or office can be recreated this way so it never has to close.

Between the library, a custom build and a capture, nearly any scene your script calls for can be shot here. More on recreating any location for filming.

The same standing sets in Burbank and Albuquerque

Both studios run the same pipeline and share the whole standing set library, so a production can split between cities and keep the same sets.

Standing sets in Burbank, Los Angeles

  • 154 S. Victory Blvd, across from Nickelodeon, about 5 minutes to Warner Bros.
  • Pre-lit green screen cyclorama, 20-ft ceiling (15 ft to grid), silent HVAC and isolated power, the floor every standing set loads onto
  • Three Unreal Engine virtual studio systems with Mo-Sys camera tracking, one render per camera, so each angle sees the standing set from its own position
  • Three Panasonic Varicam 35 cinema cameras and a 13-ft CamMate jib
  • A giant LED video village where the whole team watches the finished composite
  • Five green rooms, hair and makeup, production offices, 20+ parking spaces and drive-on load-in

Shooting in Burbank needs a city film permit, so plan it into your prep.

  • A furniture and prop warehouse for dressing the foreground of a standing set
  • Makeup and dressing rooms, a star-talent motorhome, extensive parking and easy load-in

Mr. Spaceship, An Adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s Novelette, a feature from Vista Grande Films, was captured almost entirely in camera on the Albuquerque stage. A series that books its recurring standing sets at the Albuquerque studio can put those studio days toward the New Mexico 30% refundable film credit if it qualifies; confirm with your production accountant and the New Mexico Film Office.

How a standing set rental is priced

There is no rate card; every production is quoted on its own shoot days, crew size, set complexity and studio. Included in every rental: the studio, the 250+ set library, lighting and audio packages, the teleprompter system, the support rooms, and the operator who runs the virtual sets. The optional crew package adds camera operators and a teleprompter operator, or you bring your own team.

What to send for a standing set quote

  • The script’s location list, or the sets you picked from the library
  • How many shoot days, and your dates
  • How many cameras you plan to run
  • Whether you bring your own crew or want the optional crew package
  • Which studio you prefer, Burbank or Albuquerque, or either

A producer, not a sales queue, replies with availability at both studios and a quote built on your production. Here is how a production is priced, or check availability now.

Tour the studio with your location list

Producers with a project can book a studio tour at either studio and watch a standing set composited live on the monitor. The method was pioneered in Burbank in 2007 and is now patented: two U.S. patents, one for filming with a video game engine and one for CastleVision. The rest of the kit is on the technology page.

Questions

Standing set rental: what line producers ask.

What are standing sets in Los Angeles?
Standing sets are permanently built locations, such as apartments, offices, hospitals and police stations, that productions rent instead of building from scratch. Traditional LA standing sets live on lots and stages around the city, one location per address. Ours are virtual: 250+ photoreal standing sets that load in our Burbank studio in seconds and are captured in camera, with the same library available in Albuquerque.
What standing sets are available in Los Angeles?
The library holds 250+ virtual standing sets. The ones scripts ask for most include courtrooms, a police station with holding cells, a jail, hospital rooms and corridors, apartments and houses, corporate offices and conference rooms, bars, restaurants and cafes, a grocery store, a classroom, a church, a bank, a motel and a hotel lobby, an airport terminal, an airplane cabin, a subway train, city streets and the Oval Office. Browse them by room in the set library, and tell us the sets you need when you check availability so we can confirm them.
How is a virtual standing set different from a traditional one?
A traditional standing set is one location at one address, booked around other shows' schedules. A virtual standing set library puts every location in one studio. Swap from the apartment to the hospital to the precinct between setups, redress without a rebuild, and come back months later to the exact same set for pickups.
How much does it cost to rent a standing set?
Every production is quoted individually; there is no rate card. The quote depends on shoot days, crew size, set complexity and which studio you use. The whole 250+ set library comes with the studio, so you are not paying for one location at a time, and there is no set construction required, no strike and no storage between seasons. Send your location list and dates and a producer replies with availability and a quote.
Can we shoot several standing sets in one day?
Yes. Sets load in seconds and swap between setups, so one shoot day can run from a courtroom in the morning to an apartment after lunch and a hospital corridor by evening. The crew stays on the floor, there is no company move, and because the whole library comes with the studio you are not paying for one location at a time.
Are the standing sets pre-lit and pre-dressed?
The studio is ready when you arrive. Lighting, grip and audio packages are already on the floor as part of the rental, and in Burbank the green screen cyclorama is pre-lit. Each virtual room comes dressed, and its colors, design and often its weather can be changed to fit the script. Your art department adds real furniture and props in the foreground, and Albuquerque has a furniture and prop warehouse on site.
Can we dress a virtual standing set with our own props?
Yes. Real furniture and props sit in the foreground where your actors work and blend into the virtual environment. The camera records the finished composite live, with the operator who runs the virtual sets included in the rate. Albuquerque also has a furniture and prop warehouse on site.
Can we come back to the same standing set for pickups or a second season?
Yes. The sets live on drives, so there are no storage fees and nothing is struck. A pickup months later, or the next season, reloads the exact set, lighting and framing.
What if the standing set we need is not in the library?
Our set builders and artists create it from a reference, or we capture the real place with CastleVision, our patented method for filming a real place and bringing it onto the stage. That includes a client's own restaurant, store or office, recreated so it never has to close. Between the library, a custom build and a capture, nearly any scene can be shot here.
Are the same standing sets available in Burbank and Albuquerque?
Yes. Both studios share the full library and run the same pipeline, so a production can split between Los Angeles and Albuquerque without losing continuity. Because the systems and software are upgraded constantly, not every set is available at all times; tell us the sets you need when you check availability and we will confirm them.
Can we see a standing set before we book?
Yes. Producers with a project can book a studio tour by appointment at either studio and watch a standing set composited live, in camera, on the monitor. Bring the script's location list and we will show you sets from the library that fit it.
